What is Hepatitis?

Hepatitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the liver—one of the body’s most important organs. Your liver works around the clock to filter toxins, process nutrients, fight infections, and support digestion. When it becomes inflamed, these vital functions can be affected, sometimes leading to serious health complications if left untreated.

Hepatitis can be caused by viral infections, excessive alcohol use, certain medications, or autoimmune diseases. While some forms are short-term and resolve on their own, others can become chronic and silently damage the liver for years without noticeable symptoms.

TYPES OF HEPATITIS

Types of Hepatitis

There are five main types of viral hepatitis, each caused by a different virus and spread in different ways.

Hepatitis A (HAV)

Hepatitis A is usually spread through contaminated food or water or poor sanitation. It causes a short-term illness and most people recover completely without lasting liver damage. Vaccination is the best way to prevent infection.

Hepatitis B (HBV)

Hepatitis B is one of the most common forms of hepatitis in Nigeria. It spreads through contact with infected blood and body fluids, including from mother to child during childbirth, unprotected sex, and sharing needles or sharp objects. It can become a lifelong infection if left untreated, but it is preventable with a safe and effective vaccine.

Hepatitis C (HCV)

Hepatitis C is primarily spread through contact with infected blood, such as through unsafe injections or sharing needles. Many people have no symptoms for years, allowing the virus to silently damage the liver. Unlike hepatitis B, there is no vaccine, but highly effective treatments can cure most cases.

Hepatitis D (HDV)

Hepatitis D is a less common but more severe form of hepatitis that only affects people who are already infected with hepatitis B. Preventing hepatitis B through vaccination also protects against hepatitis D.

Hepatitis E (HEV)

Hepatitis E is commonly spread through contaminated drinking water, particularly in areas with poor sanitation. Most people recover without treatment, but the infection can be dangerous for pregnant women, especially during the later stages of pregnancy.

Understanding the different types of hepatitis is important because each has its own causes, methods of transmission, prevention strategies, and treatment options. Early testing and medical care can help prevent serious liver complications and improve long-term health outcomes.

Symptoms of the Different Types of Hepatitis

Many people with hepatitis do not experience symptoms in the early stages of infection. When symptoms do appear, they are often similar across the different types of hepatitis and can range from mild to severe.

Hepatitis A Symptoms

Symptoms usually appear 2 to 7 weeks after infection and may include:

  • Fever

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Abdominal pain, especially on the right side

  • Dark urine

  • Pale or clay-colored stools

  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)

Hepatitis B Symptoms

Many people with hepatitis B have no symptoms, especially during the early stages. When symptoms occur, they may include:

  • Extreme tiredness

  • Fever

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Joint or muscle pain

  • Abdominal discomfort

  • Dark urine

  • Jaundice

Chronic hepatitis B may remain silent for years before causing serious liver damage.

Hepatitis C Symptoms

Hepatitis C is often called a “silent infection” because many people have no symptoms until significant liver damage has occurred. When symptoms develop, they may include:

  • Persistent fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea

  • Abdominal pain

  • Dark urine

  • Jaundice

  • Easy bruising or bleeding in advanced liver disease

  • Swelling of the abdomen or legs in severe cases

Hepatitis D Symptoms

People with hepatitis D usually experience symptoms similar to hepatitis B, but the illness is often more severe. Symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue

  • Fever

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Dark urine

  • Jaundice

  • Rapid worsening of liver disease in people already living with hepatitis B

Hepatitis E Symptoms

Most people recover completely, but symptoms can include:

  • Fever

  • Fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Abdominal pain

  • Dark urine

  • Pale stools

  • Jaundice

Hepatitis E can be particularly dangerous during pregnancy and requires prompt medical attention.

Common Warning Signs

Regardless of the type of hepatitis, seek medical attention if you notice:

  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin (jaundice)

  • Dark-colored urine

  • Persistent nausea or vomiting

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Extreme fatigue that does not improve

  • Swelling of the abdomen or legs

  • Confusion or difficulty staying awake

Early testing is important because many people with hepatitis have no symptoms until the disease has progressed. If you believe you may have been exposed or are experiencing any of these symptoms, speak with a qualified healthcare provider and get tested as soon as possible.
